An all-new type of media disc, which is to combine the DVD standard with an all-new high definition format, has been developed by Toshiba and Memory-Tech.
The disc – which the companies hope will help consumers on their merry way to the next generation of optical discs – will exploit the similarity between the DVD format and Toshiba's new HD-DVD format. This means film studios could put a movie in DVD format on one side and HD-DVD on the other, which will be useful for slowly introducing HD-DVD for potential customers since they'll be able to play the discs on regular DVD players.
According to the Wall Street Journal, three big Hollywood movie studios – including Warner Bros. – have said they'll be putting out movies on the HD-DVD format in the future. Holding 15 gigabytes of space, an HD-DVD will allow studios to stick even more fascinating "making of" documentaries onto their DVDs.
This announcement may prove to be a useful step in winning the battle for next-gen optical discs – Blu-ray watch out.
