Due to DVD disc makers including Italy-based Computer Support Italcard (CSI), France-based Manufacturing Advanced Media (Mam-E) and Japan-based TDK exiting the market, the European Union (EU) is expected to drop its anti-dumping investigation against optical discs coming from China and Taiwan, according to market sources.
The EU had been expected to hand down a ruling next month over dumping charges against optical discs being shipped from Taiwan and China.
However, with CSI quitting the business in the second half of 2005 and TDK halting production of DVD+R/-R discs in Luxembourg, the dumping charges may not be pursued, the sources explained.
The charges were brought against several Asian regions, including Hong Kong and Malaysia, with the investigation beginning last August, the sources noted.
Taiwan-based disc makers including CMC Magnetics, Ritek and Prodisc Technology have been aggressively adjusting their production locations to areas not under investigation, with CMC and Prodisc looking to Thailand as a new production center, while Ritek has chosen Vietnam.
The plants for CMC and Ritek will both begin production this month, according to other sources.
